Kathie Lynette Pitts Cooper

       Kathie Lynette Pitts Cooper, formerly of Anderson, South Carolina, died in Athens, Georgia on February 28, 2026 at the age of 77.

       Kathie was born on March 25, 1948 in Greenwood, Mississippi to the late James Jefferson Pitts and Katharine Smith Pitts. She was raised in Florence, S.C., where she graduated from McClenaghan High School in 1966.

       Kathie attended the University of South Carolina and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1970. She worked for the U.S. Department of the Treasury before joining Florence General Hospital as its Vice President of Finance. She later worked to improve the delivery of health care services in rural areas in the Lowcountry (Hampton) and Upstate (Anderson and Abbeville). When she retired, she was able to devote more time to community service, including volunteering with several arts organizations in the Anderson area.

       Kathie loved art, music, horses, and the beach. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, including her two children. She enjoyed attending NASCAR races with her son and Broadway shows with her daughter.

       Kathie is survived by her son, Travis (Julia) Cooper; her daughter, Kristina (Daniel) Castillo; her grandchildren, Keneth Castillo, Lucy Cooper, Liam Cooper, and Lexi Cooper; her sister, Susan (Rusty) Hitch; her sister-in-law, Jenna Pitts; her nephew, Bob (Angela) Hitch; her niece, Katharine (Austin) Bond; great-nieces, Sierra Bond, Cassie Hitch, and Caroline Bond; and great-nephews, David Hitch, Eli Hitch, and Dakota Bond. She was predeceased by her brother, James Jefferson Pitts, Jr.

       Mom, we love you more than a whole skyful.

       Services will be held on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, with a visitation at 1:00 p.m. and a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Waters-Powell Funeral Home, 400 South Dargan Street, Florence, S.C.

       Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
